Why Solar Powered Cars are a Good Idea

The age of solar-powered cars hasn't peaked just yet, but it's closer than it's ever been before. Several automobile companies have announced plans for future solar cars, with manufacturer Atlas Technologies even taking preorders for their premier product, the solar-powered Lightyear One, which is expected to arrive sometime in 2022. The Lightyear One is so anticipated that the initial offering of 150 cars, priced at €250,000 each, sold out before they were even released.

But what makes solar-powered cars such an attractive acquisition for so many people? As it turns out, quite a few things. When solar-powered cars become readily available to the public, they'll not only be great ways of saving the environment but great ways of saving a few bucks too.

Free Fuel

Undoubtedly, one of the most appealing aspects of solar-powered cars is their lack of fuel costs whatsoever. Because these cars don't require any gas to run, there's no need to ever stop at a gas pump to fill up. That can mean thousands of dollars saved each year. Solar-powered cars are even more cost-efficient than standard electric cars because you don't have to pay to charge them, either at a public station or at your home. All you need is sunlight, which is free and available for everyone to use.

Zero Emissions

In addition to reducing your spending, solar-powered cars can also reduce your impact on the environment. These cars use solar power to run electric motors that don't produce any harmful emissions.

Comfort

Many drivers out there aren't excited about solar-powered cars because they believe they'll underperform in many regards compared to petrol and diesel-run engines. This isn't necessarily the case, though. Not only do electric motors provide a smoother and more comfortable driving experience, but they can often run faster than many gas-powered alternatives. This is because the components used in solar-powered cars are significantly lighter which allows them to achieve faster speeds.
